Who are the Volt Vespids?
We, the Volt Vespids, are the driven FIRST robotics team representing Ithaca Public Schools. Ever since our establishment in winter of 2023 we encourage our students in the fields of problem solving, teamwork, sportsmanship, “coopetition”, and creativity. We prioritize these in our students to assist them in becoming well-rounded adults in the future.
How do FIRST Robotics competitions work?
Every season FIRST robotics changes the challenge for teams to face. Teams will have to adapt their robots to the new challenge. Robots can be made from scratch or made from a kit bot. At the start of a match the team will run their bot autonomously. Then the teams are free to operate themselves. Normally the challenges for each season include a few human elements such as throwing something to score or dropping something to a robot.
What to expect at a competition?
Upon arrival at a competition, each team will go to their designated pit to store and work on their robot. Safety is very important, so safety glasses must be worn in order to enter the pits. In the pits, teams will go through an inspection and change anything necessary. When the time comes to compete, random teams of three will go head-to-head. Teams will compete in multiple matches each day. Eventually, the teams get a lunch break and eat as a team.
